For the first time, Senegal will be participating in the 60th International Art Exhibition, commonly known as the Biennale di Venezia. They’ve chosen Alioune Diagne, an artist with a powerful message and unique style, to showcase their country’s art from April 20 to November 24, 2024.
Who is Alioune Diagne?
Born in 1985 in Senegal’s Kaffrine, Diagne has made a name for himself in the global art scene. He has a unique approach to painting, blending real-life scenes with abstract details, which he calls “figuro-abstro.” His works tell stories of life in Senegal and the experiences of Africans living abroad.
Diagne isn’t just about art for art’s sake; he uses his platform to discuss big societal issues. This includes topics like the environment, women’s roles, and discrimination.
What to Expect at the Biennale?
For the Venice Biennale, Diagne is collaborating with the Senegalese Ministry of Culture and Historical Heritage, and Massamba Mbaye, a respected art critic. Their combined efforts will be showcased in the Senegal pavilion, guaranteeing a memorable experience for visitors.
Where Else Can We See His Work?
Alioune Diagne is no stranger to exhibitions. His art has been displayed across Europe, Africa, and Asia since 2011. His work was so impactful that in 2019, it was added to Senegal’s important art collection, the Domaine Privé Artistique de l’Etat.
Currently represented by Galerie Templon, Diagne’s work was recently highlighted at the Dakar Biennale in 2022. And for those in France, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen is exhibiting his work until March 5, 2024, in a show titled ‘Ndox – Glint (The Glint of Water).’
In Summary
Alioune Diagne’s feature at the 60th Venice Biennale is significant for both him and Senegal. Visitors should anticipate art that’s not just visually appealing but also thought-provoking, shedding light on the vibrant art scene in Senegal and the profound themes that inspire Diagne’s creations.
