Artists for Morocco: 26 Moroccan Artists Unite for Earthquake Relief

On September 8th, Morocco was shaken by a devastating 6.8 magnitude earthquake, claiming over 2,000 lives, injuring 1,404, and impacting an estimated 300,000 individuals. With numbers still on the rise and many trapped or missing in the aftermath, the nation finds solace in unity.

In the wake of this tragedy, a collective of talented Moroccan artists, ‘Artists For Morocco’, has formed to aid in the relief efforts.

Under the leadership of notable figures like Samira Larouci, editor-at-large for Moroccan GQ Middle East, photographer Anass Ouaziz, and designer Ismail Elaaddioui, the collective comprises 26 esteemed Moroccan photographers and artists. They are: Hassan Hajjaj, Meriem Bennani, Yto Barrada, Mous Lamrabat, Ilyes Griyeb, Hanane El Ouardani, Mounir Raji, Rida Tabit, Ismail Zaidy, Jinane Ennasri, Yoriyas Yassine Alaoui, Yassine Sellam, Mehdi El Mallali, Abdela Igmirien, Ismail Elaaddioui, Marouane Beslem, Mohamed Amine Houari, Ali El Madani, Salaheddine El Bouaaichi, Fatimazohra Serri, Joseph Ouechen, Iman Zaoin, M’hammed Kilito, Seif Kousmate, Imane Djamil, and Imane Idjamil.

Determined to make a difference, Artists For Morocco has initiated a print sale, channeling all proceeds to two NGOs committed to on-the-ground relief: the Amal Women’s Training Center and the Rif Tribes Foundation. Both are hard at work in the affected areas, ensuring the victims receive the support they urgently need.

Founded in 2022, Rif Tribes focuses on aiding the isolated victims in the challenging terrains of the Atlas Mountains. Their connection to remote communities and volunteers has been vital during these trying times.

The coming together of Artists For Morocco demonstrates the indomitable spirit of community that can arise even amidst adversity. Through their art, they not only encapsulate the essence of Moroccan culture and resilience but actively transform it into a tangible force for change. Those wishing to support their initiative can visit the Artists for Morocco website for further details.
