Egyptian artist, Amer Ghada enlisted as one of the 11 renowned international artists to reinterpret and transform Dior’s timeless icon, The Lady Dior Handbag for the 7th edition of the Dior Lady Art Project.
Amer has reinterpreted the iconic Lady Dior through a feminist lens. She questions the body and the place of women in the art world and in contemporary societies through her patchwork and sequin embellished models that feature words associated with women’s qualities like “resilient” or “loving”, while the interior shocks with energized hues of pink and orange.
“I like the charms that hang from the Lady Dior bags, and I wanted to create a parallel Ghada charm. I also like that this bag is both a commodity and a piece of jewelry.”, Amer said.
ABOUT GHADA AMER
Born in Cairo, Ghada Amer is the first artist of Egyptian origin to reinterpret the iconic Lady Dior for the seventh edition of the Dior Lady Art project. A committed feminist, she questions the body and the place of women in the art world and in contemporary societies through her hybrid oeuvre. Based on the simultaneous use of painting and embroidery – a skill considered eminently feminine – her works, like a vibrant plea, invite women to reappropriate their bodies and their sensuality.
