In a celebration of burgeoning talent and artistic innovation, the Tomorrows/Today cash prize for 2024 has been awarded to multidisciplinary artist Boemo Diale, hailing from Mafikeng, South Africa. At just twenty-three years old, Diale stands as one of the youngest participants at this year’s ICTAF, yet her work resonates with a maturity and depth that belies her age. Exploring themes of queer identity, spirituality, and introspection with a focus on healing, Diale’s art captivated both audiences and judges alike.

Diale’s selection for the prestigious prize was the result of a meticulous process overseen by an international jury. Led by Tomorrows/Today Italian curator Dr. Mariella Franzoni, alongside Zeitz MOCAA Curator Tandazani Dhlakama and independent curator Heba El Kayal, the jury recognized Diale’s unique vision and its potential impact on the art world.

This recognition not only celebrates Diale’s current achievements but also heralds the promising trajectory of her artistic journey. Represented by the Kalashnikovv Gallery, Diale’s win not only elevates her own profile but also shines a light on the gallery’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent.

The theme of this year’s Tomorrows/Today, “Inhabiting the Wild,” provided a fertile ground for artists to explore and reimagine notions of wildness through their work. According to Dr. Franzoni, this theme was chosen for its ability to transcend conventional dualities, offering artists a broad canvas upon which to express themselves freely.

Diale’s success underscores the importance of platforms like Tomorrows/Today in providing visibility and support to emerging artists. With the curated section of the fair expanding significantly under this year’s theme, more artists were afforded the opportunity to showcase their work and contribute to the ongoing dialogue surrounding contemporary art.

As Diale’s star continues to rise, her win serves as a testament to the power of artistic expression to transcend boundaries and connect with audiences on a profound level. With her talent and vision, she is poised to make an indelible mark on the art world for years to come.
