The Concept: Modernist Grotto Meets Ancient Inspiration
The name “Cueva,” meaning “cave” in Latin, hints at the restaurant’s main architectural theme—an immersive, cave-like interior that captures the organic beauty of natural rock formations. Badie, known for his fluid, dynamic designs, drew inspiration from both the natural world and the human form. “We wanted to create a space that reflects the complex elegance of the body, while ensuring comfort and practicality,” Badie explains. This fusion of organic forms and functionality sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience.
A Sculpted Space: Advanced Technology Meets Traditional Craftsmanship
The design of Esca Cueva is a marvel of contemporary architecture. Advanced 3D modeling software was employed to bring the restaurant’s undulating, curvaceous forms to life, allowing Badie to precisely capture the complex geometry of the structure. The steel framework, or “exoskeleton,” was meticulously constructed by local artisans, who applied layers of stucco to achieve the raw, earthy finish that mimics the natural weathering of stone. The resulting interior evokes the feeling of being enveloped in a natural cave, enhanced by strategically placed artificial lighting that accentuates every depression and curve in the design.

The restaurant’s design is not just visually stunning but also emotionally resonant. “We aimed to create a space that dissolves the boundary between the diner and their surroundings,” says Badie. The seating and furniture, designed with minimalist, modernist principles in mind, feature earthy tones and natural materials that enhance the space’s warm and intimate ambiance.
