FNB Art Joburg is set to make a triumphant return to the Sandton Convention Centre from September 6-8, 2024, for its 17th edition. As a cornerstone of Africa’s contemporary art and culture calendar, this premier event continues to nurture a sustainable ecosystem for African art on the continent and in the diaspora.
This year, FNB Art Joburg is introducing an innovative new section called GIF (Gallery Image Format), providing galleries with a platform to spotlight photographers. This space will showcase image makers and include all lens-based media, supporting both static and animated images. The addition of GIF reflects the fair’s ongoing commitment to embracing diverse forms of artistic expression.
FNB Chief Marketing Officer Faye Mfikwe emphasized the fair’s evolving vision: “We are reimagining FNB Art Joburg. This year’s fair will offer attendees and exhibitors the best in contemporary African art and culture. We aim to create a culture of appreciation and ownership that empowers creative talent in South Africa and across the African continent. As FNB, we are committed to supporting the creative economy and ensuring contemporary African art remains a consistent player in the global art landscape. We are immensely proud of our long-standing sponsorship of FNB Art Joburg, now in its 17th year.”
The fair adopts a hybrid approach, merging curatorial and commercial interventions across six specialized sections: Gallery HUB, gallery LAB, MAX, GIF, ETC, AUX, and ORG. These sections will feature renowned galleries, emerging artists, and institutions from across the continent.
To kick off Open City 2024, The BMW Art Generation, supported by FNB, will take place on August 31. This event will feature a conference, exhibitions, performance art, live music, food, coffee, and wine stalls.
FNB Art Joburg’s Managing Director, Mandla Sibeko, also highlighted the fair’s broader impact: “FNB Art Joburg prides itself on its year-long support of various facets in the ecosystem. We aim for economic stimulation, inclusivity, and access for all with 16+ days of culture through Open City. This consistent, accessible, and reputable offering will further continue to propel us into the future.”
Open City runs from August 29 to September 13, activating Johannesburg with art, music, performance, food, and fashion, encouraging visitors and residents to immerse themselves in the city’s rich cultural offerings.
FNB Art Joburg 2024 promises to be an unmissable event, offering the best in contemporary African art at the Sandton Convention Centre. Mark your calendars for September 6-8, 2024, and join in celebrating the vibrancy of African art and culture.
