Nestled on the pristine shores of Walker Bay in Vermont, Western Cape, this modern beach house is a design masterpiece. Created by graphic designers Alida Kannemeyer and Piers Buckle, the couple teamed up with Engelbrecht & Scorgie Architects to turn a simple seaside cottage into an awe-inspiring contemporary home that embraces its stunning coastal surroundings.

The location couldn’t be more perfect: steps from the ocean and tucked into the native fynbos, the plot has been in Alida’s family for 60 years. Initially built as a weekend escape, the house evolved into a full-time residence when the couple sold their Observatory home in Cape Town. The decision to settle permanently led to an architectural upgrade—adding a second storey that makes the most of the incredible ocean views.

The house itself is a study in clean-lined, Mid-century elegance. The street-facing facade features white-painted brickwork, tall windows, and built-in planters. Inside, the open-plan layout upstairs brings in tons of natural light, with large glass sliding doors connecting indoor living spaces to a spacious outdoor veranda. The ocean-side deck offers breathtaking views, with southern right whales often spotted just off the shoreline.

Downstairs, minimalist yet cozy bedrooms with en suite bathrooms create a serene retreat. The interiors blend contemporary South African furnishings with vibrant art pieces from both local and international artists, adding personality to the sleek, modern design.

This Walker Bay home is more than just a beach house—it’s the ultimate coastal escape that balances smart design with natural beauty, making it a truly enviable haven.
