Nigerian artist Kingsley Ayogu’s latest solo exhibition, “If Hives Could Dance in Colors,” offers an immersive exploration of themes such as freedom, identity, and visibility through a striking series of mixed media artworks. The exhibition, hosted by the African Artists’ Foundation (AAF) in collaboration with SOTO Gallery, opened on August 24, 2024, at the SOTO Gallery Space in Lagos. Curated by Princess Ayoola, this showcase marks a significant departure from Ayogu’s well-known hyper-realistic portraits, as the artist embarks on a bold new journey of self-expression and artistic liberation.

In this exhibition, Ayogu draws on the metaphor of the hive, a symbol of both order and confinement. His vibrant use of color, sponges, nets, and layered textures breaks free from convention, inviting viewers to engage with his works on a deeper, more participatory level. The artworks evoke feelings of love, care, and a renewed sense of visibility.

Kingsley Ayogu, a prominent figure in the contemporary Nigerian art scene, has been recognized for his meticulous portraiture. However, this latest body of work showcases his evolution as an artist, embracing new materials and themes to reflect the complexities of African identity. “If Hives Could Dance in Colors” will be on display until September 21, 2024.
