On the occasion of the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Moroccan photographer Mous Lamrabat, in partnership with Loft Art Gallery, presents Moustalgia through a site-specific takeover of The Mellah, transforming the boutique hotel into a living exhibition space from February 4 to 8, 2026.
Departing from the conventions of the white-cube gallery, Moustalgia unfolds across the architecture and daily rhythms of The Mellah. Lamrabat’s photographic works inhabit bedrooms, corridors, lounges, and shared spaces, integrating seamlessly into the fabric of the hotel. The exhibition dissolves traditional boundaries between art and environment, inviting visitors to encounter the works through intimacy rather than distance.

Conceived as a lived experience, the takeover positions art not as an isolated object but as a presence woven into everyday life. Guests and visitors move through the hotel as they would normally—sleeping, conversing, gathering—while surrounded by Lamrabat’s images. In doing so, Moustalgia proposes an alternative mode of exhibition, where hospitality becomes a curatorial framework and the act of viewing is inseparable from lived experience.
Moustalgia, Lamrabat’s ongoing body of work, explores questions of identity, heritage, and cultural hybridity. Through bold, pop-inflected portraits that combine humor, symbolism, and visual contrast, the artist challenges inherited representations and fixed narratives. Drawing on references from fashion, advertising, and popular culture, his photographs reframe African and diasporic identities with both playfulness and critical intent.

The project is presented in collaboration with Loft Art Gallery, a leading Moroccan contemporary art gallery that represents Mous Lamrabat. Through this collaboration, the takeover extends the dialogue initiated in the gallery into a different spatial and experiential context, allowing the artist’s work to be encountered beyond the conventional gallery setting.
The choice of The Mellah as host venue reinforces the conceptual framework of the project. Situated in Marrakech’s historic Mellah district—a neighborhood shaped by centuries of cultural and religious coexistence—the hotel exists within a historically cross-cultural urban fabric. Conceived as a hybrid space where architecture, design, and contemporary culture intersect, The Mellah extends this legacy by opening its rooms and shared spaces to artistic intervention. In doing so, it affirms its vocation as a lived cultural platform that privileges exchange, conversation, and proximity over spectacle.
Alongside the exhibition, the takeover is punctuated by a series of curated moments, including an opening preview, a behind-the-scenes projection with the artist, a conversation with young collectors, and a closing brunch. These gatherings emphasize dialogue and accessibility, echoing the project’s broader ambition to bring art closer to everyday life.
