Nobel Koty Wins 2024 Ellipse Prize

In a significant recognition of Beninese artistry, Nobel Koty has been awarded the prestigious Ellipse Prize 2024 for his evocative self-portraits. Celebrating his win, the artist will receive a production grant and the opportunity to exhibit his work at the AKAA (Also Known As Africa) fair, scheduled from October 18 to 20, 2024. This honor also includes bespoke support and a communication campaign designed to enhance his visibility among professional networks locally and internationally.

Chosen from a competitive pool of 72 applicants, Koty stood out among five finalists. The selection was made by an independent jury of contemporary art professionals, including notable specialists of the Beninese art scene such as Armelle Dakouo, Dominique Zinkpè, Céline Coyac Atindehou, and Lylly Houngnihin.

Born in 1988 in Cotonou, Benin, Nobel Koty’s self-portraits are a deep dive into his inner world. His artworks are characterized by a neutral background that isolates the subject, creating an intimate space that highlights vulnerability and introspection. Through his art, Koty explores the notion of modesty and the connection between the individual and their physical form. His canvases serve as sanctuaries where human fragility is revealed without restraint, capturing moments of doubt and uncertainty essential for personal development.

The Ellipse Prize, which this year centered on the theme “Contemporary Tradition,” aims to foster intercultural exchanges and support emerging artists by providing professional opportunities beyond their native borders. The prize also seeks to disseminate the messages conveyed by artists from various backgrounds, using creativity to strengthen social bonds.

For the first time since its inception, the Ellipse Prize will feature a collective exhibition showcasing the works of the five finalists: Marcel Kpoho, Nella Aguessy, Maria Adjovi, Nauld Adjahuime, and Nobel Koty. This exhibition will be held at Maison Rouge in Cotonou from June 28 to July 19, 2024.

Nobel Koty’s victory not only highlights his personal achievement but also shines a spotlight on the vibrant and evolving art scene in Benin. His success at the Ellipse Prize 2024 underscores the importance of introspective art in understanding and connecting with the human condition. Art enthusiasts are encouraged to witness the richness of emerging Beninese artistic talent at the upcoming exhibitions, promising a profound experience of contemporary African art.
