In a landmark event for African architecture, Palais de Lomé has announced its inaugural Architecture Encounters, Les Rencontres Architecturales Africaines (RAA #1), set to take place from November 28 to 30, 2024. Curated by the dynamic architecture and research practice, Studio NEiDA, co-founded by Jeanne Autran-Edorh and Fabiola Büchele, this event promises two days of thought-provoking talks, workshops, and city tours, with a parallel exhibition highlighting Togo’s architectural legacy from the past century to today.
This marks a significant milestone for Palais de Lomé, which has transformed from a historical site into a vibrant hub for contemporary culture and dialogue since its reopening five years ago. The architectural grandeur of the palace itself underscores the importance of preserving and reimagining Africa’s built heritage, setting the stage for this international architectural gathering spearheaded by its founding director, Sonia Lawson.
Studio NEiDA’s curation will spotlight the theme of Conservation and Transformation, exploring how historic building traditions can inspire innovative, sustainable solutions for contemporary architectural practices. Speakers from across West Africa, including renowned architects and designers such as Nana Biamah-Ofosu (Ghana/UK), Nzinga Biegueng Mboup (Senegal), Josias Seddoh (Togo), and Limbo Accra (Ghana), will present their insights on sustainable materials, Afrocentric design approaches, and equitable architecture processes.
The exhibition will delve into Togo’s iconic architectural gems, from endangered historic structures to hidden modernist masterpieces in Lomé. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive discussions, workshops, and guided tours, deepening their engagement with Lomé’s unique architectural heritage.
Co-curators Jeanne Autran-Edorh and Fabiola Büchele are excited to bring this platform to life: “We are honored to curate the first architecture-focused event at Palais de Lomé. African architecture is rich, complex, and diverse, and this event is a celebration of its legacy and transformation.”
Architecture Encounters (RAA #1) promises to be a pivotal moment in West African architecture, paving the way for deeper discussions on the future of the continent’s built environments.
