The supervisory board of Documenta has unveiled a new six-member Finding Committee for the prestigious quinquennial event’s sixteenth edition, set to open in Kassel in 2027. Among the distinguished appointees is Senegalese curator N’Goné Fall, known for her extensive contributions to contemporary African art and cultural policies.

N’Goné Fall, who was born in Dakar in 1967, brings a wealth of experience to the committee. A graduate with honors from the École Spéciale d’Architecture in Paris, she has served as Editorial Director of the influential Paris-based magazine Revue Noire and curated numerous high-profile exhibitions across Africa, Europe, and the USA. Fall has also held academic positions at Senghor University in Alexandria, Egypt, and lectured at institutions like the Michaelis School of Arts in Cape Town and Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey. Her strategic plans and evaluation reports for international organizations span continents, from The Netherlands and Belgium to South Africa and South Korea.

The newly formed Finding Committee, also including Yilmaz Dziewior, Sergio Edelsztein, Gridthiya Gaweewong, Mami Kataoka, and Yasmil Raymond, is tasked with selecting the next artistic director of Documenta 16. This group is charged with inviting pioneering contemporary art figures to present their concepts, from which the most promising will be chosen for implementation. This new committee follows the resignation of the previous panel amid controversy and challenges, marking a significant step towards stabilizing and reimagining Documenta’s future.

Documenta Managing Director Andreas Hoffmann expressed confidence in the committee’s expertise and diverse perspectives, anticipating a forward-looking proposal for the artistic direction of Documenta 16. The final selection of a new artistic director will be crucial for the event’s success, following recent turbulence and a strong emphasis on ensuring respect for human dignity in curatorial practices.
