Transforming the Invisible: Warwickshire’s Hidden Haven Revamped by Visionary Designers

In the serene landscapes of Warwickshire, England, Dhilnawaaz Khan Trotman and Annahita Samiri have masterfully reinvented a remarkable residence known as the Invisible House. Founded by South African-born Dhilnawaaz Khan Trotman alongside Iranian-born Annahita Samiri, their firm DKT Interior Design Studio has converted this elusive property into a warm, inviting retreat, shifting its focus from a striking architectural spectacle to a livable sanctuary that harmonizes with its natural surroundings.

This unique single-story structure consists of eight distinct pavilions, enveloped entirely in smoked mirrored glass that mirrors the slender birch trees nearby, effectively blending the building into the environment and giving it an almost ethereal, vanishing quality. Tucked away in a peaceful rural setting, the Invisible House rarely appears on the real estate market, but when it did in 2023, it captured widespread attention. Acquired by a prominent global athlete, the new owner found the original interior too austere and gallery-like, prompting them to enlist DKT to infuse it with personality and comfort.

DKT’s redesign philosophy centered on evolving the space from a mere visual artifact into a nurturing home. “Our goal was to soften its intensity and imbue it with warmth,” explains Dhilnawaaz. The exterior’s dramatic camouflage sets high expectations for wonder upon entry, but the initial starkness felt impersonal. By introducing subtle elements of soul and softness, the duo aimed to create an atmosphere where residents could truly relax and connect.

The main bedroom also features an Eichholtz Congreso chair, and a forged travertine lamp and burl sidetable by Six The Residence.

Annahita shares a memorable moment from their initial visit: “The house is so seamlessly disguised among the foliage that we accidentally entered the neighboring property first!” she recounts with amusement. Once inside the correct home, the potential was evident—the architecture was flawless, yet it lacked the breath of life, feeling more like a showcase than a dwelling where one could unwind.

Nestled on a private expanse, this four-bedroom abode is encircled by lush trees and thick ferns, featuring expansive glass doors and windows that offer uninterrupted views of the verdant garden. The design team navigated the home’s exacting geometry and clean lines with deliberate minimalism, as vertical expansions were off-limits. “Each alteration required careful thought and clear intent,” Dhilnawaaz notes, emphasizing the need for purposeful interventions.

A standout feature of the overhaul begins at the entrance, where Annahita took cues from the playful light patterns cast by an outdoor pond onto the ceiling. She crafted a bespoke timber structure that mimics flowing fabric—curvaceous, artistic, and entirely original, with no repeated forms. Seamlessly incorporated storage units blend into this sculptural element, concealing their practicality behind elegant design.

“This represents a pioneering approach to woodworking, as far as we’re aware,” Annahita states. “The wood captures the essence of draped material, appearing so gentle it seems it could move with a breeze.” This foyer not only welcomes visitors but also embodies DKT’s core ethos: blending cutting-edge creativity with a sense of closeness and familiarity.

Throughout the residence, DKT fostered a harmonious contrast between the building’s rigid framework and organic gentleness. Sharp edges were countered with rounded millwork and plush furnishings, while cool surfaces gained layers of inviting textures through limewashed walls. This interplay generates a surprising coziness, transforming the space into a balanced haven.

Art plays a pivotal role in linking the interior to the external wilderness. Partnerships with Studio Lawrence yielded a vivid green artwork that draws the forest indoors, while pieces from Emily Bourne and Zarefa at Studio London add richness and dimension. Additionally, Iranian creator Eisa Jabari produced a custom work that strays from his typical style, drawing inspiration directly from the house’s enigmatic aura. Complementing these are handcrafted rugs from DKT’s La Soie line, woven in Iran from silk and wool, merging ancient artisanal techniques with the home’s modern vibe. “Incorporating cultural roots was essential,” Annahita reflects, highlighting how these elements bridge tradition and innovation.

The kitchen’s stainless-steel cabinetry contrasts a bespoke Taj Mahal quartzite island and barstools from FandF Vintage.

The kitchen underwent one of the most dramatic shifts, evolving from a sterile zone into a harmonious gathering spot. Sleek stainless-steel units now coexist with richly veined stone countertops, accented by elegant wine racks resembling artistic pillars. Tailored illumination diffuses the harshness, breathing vitality into the area. “It’s retained its structural integrity but now pulses with energy,” Dhilnawaaz observes.

The dining area features a travertine marble table from Atelier278 and chairs by Emmanuel Gallina.

In more intimate quarters, such as the dressing room, DKT elevated functionality to artistry. Resembling a curated exhibit, it features lit displays for an impressive array of athletic footwear and high-end items, utilizing cozy wood tones, reflective glass, and strategic lights to turn organization into an aesthetic experience. “These personal areas should celebrate daily routines with elegance,” Dhilnawaaz emphasizes.

The renovation wasn’t without hurdles; the team uncovered a lack of wall insulation, likening the structure to “skeleton without substance.” They opted to replaster extensively, bolstering the home’s durability from the inside out. As Annahita wisely puts it, “True design excellence lies in the invisible foundations as much as the visible flourishes.” This project underscores DKT’s commitment to thorough, thoughtful craftsmanship.
