The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) has unveiled the distinguished recipients of its Zeitz MOCAA Honorary Awards, recognizing exceptional contributions to the contemporary art scene in Africa. Among the honorees is renowned artist Wangechi Mutu, acclaimed for her groundbreaking exploration of the female form and cultural expression.
Mutu, a founding member of the Zeitz MOCAA Global Council, has been selected for the prestigious Zeitz MOCAA Award for Artistic Excellence. Her work, characterized by its profound portrayal of the female body intertwined with natural elements, has captivated audiences worldwide.
Koyo Kouoh, the executive director, and chief curator of Zeitz MOCAA, underscored the significance of these awards, stating, “The Zeitz MOCAA Honorary Awards are a tribute to visionaries whose contributions are essential to the thriving contemporary art scene on the Continent. Their impact resonates far beyond artistic realms, inspiring positive change and fostering cultural dialogue.”
The Gala evening, scheduled for Sunday, February 11, 2024, will feature an immersive experience inspired by the works of acclaimed artist Athi Patra Ruga. Attendees will be treated to captivating performances by Simphiwe Dana and the Nobuhle Ashanti Trio.
Adrienne Edwards, curator of performance and director of curatorial affairs at the Whitney Museum of American Art, will laud Mutu’s groundbreaking work and celebrate her as a true visionary during the event.
In addition to honoring Mutu, the Gala will also recognize collector Louis Norval with the Zeitz MOCAA Honorary Award for Philanthropic Achievement. The evening will include an exclusive live and virtual auction, featuring works by internationally recognized artists such as William Kentridge, Senzeni Marasela, Mary Evans, and others, with all proceeds supporting the museum’s curatorial and education programs.
